Tips for choosing paper
- Grammage and bulk: Impacts thickness, stiffness, spine width, shipping cost
- Opacity: Higher is better for two-sided text and images
- Whiteness: Cream reduces glare for novels; high whiteness improves color pop
- Finish: Uncoated (natural, writeable) vs coated matt/silk/gloss (sharper images)
- Smoothness and stiffness: Page-turn feel, ink laydown, and runnability
- Grain direction: Must run parallel to spine for flat pages and strong binding
- Printing techniques, binding and finish, durability and lifespan, use and reading experience, images and design are, of course, also important factors to consider.
